• Application Areas: You can select different tiles for parking, outdoor seating, pavements or staircases.


• Required Surface Resistance (Grip): Different areas may require different amounts of surface grip based on elevation, footfall, and usage. The floor tile’s surface grip is indicated with an R-value determined through a wet ramp test. H&R Johnson is one of the few tile manufacturers with R&D and quality assurance facilities in India for tile ratings.
  
  You can choose floor tiles ranging from R9 to R12 skid-resistance values. Tiles with R9-R10 values are recommended for light footfall areas, such as in residential spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, etc.
  
  Tiles with higher R values are recommended for areas with higher safety requirements and wet grip needs like swimming pool decks, cloakrooms, airports, hotel foyers, shopping centres, and commercial kitchens.


• Beautification Needs: You may want to provide a unique appearance and aesthetic appeal to the outdoor seating spaces, such as building entrances, patios, outdoor seating areas, etc. Such spaces can use tiles equipped with anti-skid properties and intricate surface designs.

• Amount & Type of Traffic: The amount and type of traffic wear down the surface of tiles. So, you need to install tiles with adequate surface hardness in areas according to the type and magnitude of traffic. The tiles’ surface hardness is indicated with a PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating from 1 to 5. Here, tiles with PEI-5 ratings have the hardest surface and are best for use in vehicle parking and high footfall areas.

• Patio & Outdoor Designer Tiles: These tiles can beautify the patio, veranda, and other exposed seating areas in the house. These tiles are sturdy and feature a skid-resistant surface recommended for public area usage or restaurant. These tiles are different from other parking exterior tiles due to their creative appearance. • Garden & Pool Deck Area Tiles: These are full-body vitrified tiles that give out a natural stone-like appearance. 1. What type of tiles are best for the parking area?

Tiles with a PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating of 5 or above are good for commercial parking areas. Tiles with a PEI rating of 4 or 5 will work well for the residential (home) parking space. Typically glazed vitrified tiles and full-body vitrified tiles like Johnson Endura Paver Series tiles offer this kind of strength.

2. Are outdoor tiles heat-resistant?

Outdoor tiles are usually vitrified tiles manufactured at temperatures above 1200 degrees centigrade. So, the final material is usually quite resistant to heat. Outdoor vitrified tiles also offer good thermal insulation.

3. How thick should outdoor tiles be?

Outdoor tiles can be as thick as 0.8 cm to up to 2 cm thick depending on the area, type of placement, and type of traffic they will bear. Tiles installed using a full adhesive base can be thinner than the tiles installed using raisers. Similarly, tiles bearing vehicle traffic should be thicker than tiles bearing foot traffic.
