As the summer season approaches, are we prepared to beat the heat with all precautions?
A few proactive steps will help us amidst rising temperatures and potential heatwaves. More awareness is necessary as effective addressing leads to better effective management.
- Stay hydrated.
- Block direct sunlight.
- Stay covered.
- Remain indoors from 12-4 pm.
- Avoid activity in the sun.
- Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and high-sugar content drinks.
While we stay at home, the outside heat and scorching sun heat the roof, and the temperature of the roof surface and beneath soar and make us uncomfortable. The indoor cooling systems fail to work satisfactorily. Electricity bills keep soaring high.
This summer we can stay comfortable indoors, consider laying "Johnson Endura Cool Roof SRI Tiles" on your roof, balconies elevation etc.
What is SRI and Why Does It Matter?
The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) is an indicator of the ability of a roof surface to return solar energy to the atmosphere. Under the same solar heat exposure, roof surfaces with a higher SRI value will be cooler than a roof surface having a lower SRI value. Therefore, it is advised to use roofing materials with high SRI value to ensure higher comfort inside the building and reduce air conditioning use.
Most roofing materials have an SRI value between 0 and 100. Even the U.S. Green Building Council uses SRI (value 78) value for LEED accreditation. It should be noted that SRI is a calculated value and is different from the measured SR of a surface. Johnson’s Cool Roof Tiles have an SRI value above 90, which makes them worth considering for every home or building owner.
How is SRI Value Determined?
SRI value is calculated using the roof surface’s Solar Reflectance (SR) and Thermal Emittance (TE). Here, SR refers to the ability of the roof’s surface to reflect solar energy and TE refers to the ability of the surface to radiate absorbed heat. Both SR and TE are measured values that range between 0 and 1. Here, 1 denotes that the roofing material is the most reflective or emissive material while 0 denotes the least reflective or emissive.
The SRI value of roofing materials is determined using a mathematical formula. The formula calculates the value by comparing the surface temperatures with the temperatures of a standard white material (with SR 0.8, TE 0.9, and SRI 100), and a standard black material (with SR 0.05, TE 0.9, and SRI 0) under the same solar energy.
The solar reflectance and hence the calculated SRI value can be influenced by various factors, including the material type, years of usage, and others. By comparing the SRI values of different roofing materials initially and after a few years of usage, you can decide on the best material to use for the roofing of your building.
Benefits of Using Cool Roof SRI Tiles
Cool roof SRI tiles offer several significant advantages, some of which are listed below:
- 10 to 15 degrees reduction in the surface temperature.
- Air conditioning requirements are reduced, which further helps you save money on electricity bills.
- Reduction in the conduction of heat into the building.
- Reduction in the heat island effect in the cities.
- Improved indoor comfort for residents.
- Contributes to reducing carbon footprint.
Exploring Johnson Endura’s Cool Roof Tile Collection
Johnson Endura Cool Roof (SRI) is an innovative range of vitrified tiles that come with a special glaze composed of Alumina Silicate, embedded with nanoparticles of Zirconium Silicate and Zinc Oxide. This special glaze coating makes the tile reflect and emit most of the solar heat back into the atmosphere. The surface reflectance and emittance percentage are far higher in SRI tiles than in the ordinary.
Endura Cool Roof Tiles have an SRI value >90 (white colour) which helps reduce the roof surface temperature by 10-15 degrees Celsius, resulting in beneath roof temperature remaining cooler, hence fewer loads on cooling systems that results in savings on electricity.
The Endura Cool roof SRI tiles are available in different sizes, thicknesses (30x30cm in 8mm, 10mm & 20mm thickness & 40x40cm in 8mm thickness), and various soothing colours, including white, ivory, light grey, yellow, pink, almond & sky blue.
These Endura Cool Roof SRI tiles are recommended for terrace, balcony, exterior facade cladding, and pavement application.
Johnson Endura Cool Roof SRI Tiles, the smart way to remain comfortable Indoors in summer.
Although almost every home and building has indoor air conditioning options these days, these appliances can be very heavy on your electricity bills. Therefore, opting for cool roof tiles with high SRI value is always a better option. You can enhance your indoor comfort, save money on electricity bills, and contribute to a greener environment by reducing the carbon footprint. Just choose Johnson’s Cool Roof Tiles and make your indoor experiences even better.
